Work to begin on intersection in Chestnuthill
Motorists who travel through the Brodheadsville area will be experiencing traffic delays as part of a project to reduce congestion and improve safety at the intersection of routes 209 and 715 in Chestnuthill Township.
It will consist of widening the intersection to provide turning lanes, which will include a left turning lane with arrow from Route 209 north to Route 715 north; left turning lane from Route 209 south to a driveway; and right turning lane with arrow from Route 715 south to Route 209 south. It includes replacing and upgrading the traffic signal, sidewalk construction and other miscellaneous construction.Through December, motorists will experience off-peak lane restrictions on both Route 209 and Route 715 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 6 a.m.The restrictions on Route 209 will occur between Route 115 and Bond Lane, and the restrictions on Route 715 will occur between Route 209 and Gould Road.Motorists are advised to expect delays and use caution driving through the area. There will be no restrictions during major holiday weekends.Traffic will be down to one lane with flagmen during paving. Traffic switches which will occur at night. Throughout most of the project, traffic will flow in both directions.No closures are expected, and traffic will be stopped only when flagging operations are ongoing.However, Nancy Shupp, an employee at R W Altemose & Son True Value in Brodheadsville, said she's certain the project will affect the area."It's just going to be a big mess," Shupp said. "It's probably going to be mass confusion; especially during the summer."A step-by-step time frame for the project:• Selective tree trimming and removal.• Utilities will relocate utility poles and services.• Temporary widening to be constructed on 209 south.• A temporary traffic signal will be installed at the intersection of routes 209 and 715.• Traffic will be shifted to the southbound side of 209 using a 10-foot lane for each direction, and shifted to the northbound side of 715 using a 10-foot lane for each direction. A temporary traffic signal will be in operation.• Work will proceed on the 209 north side and the 715 south side. The work includes widening, pipe and curb installation, as well as sidewalk and construction of new signal facilities for the intersection.• When 209 north and 715 south work is completed, traffic then will be shifted to the 209 northbound side, using an 11-foot lane for each direction, and shifted to the 715 southbound, using a 10-foot lane for each direction while widening, new pipe installation, curb installation, along with sidewalk and construction of new signal facilities for that side of both routes.Northeast Site Contractors of East Stroudsburg is the general contractor on the $1,587,021 project. The intersection has an average daily traffic volume of 18,179 vehicles on Route 209, and 5,266 vehicles on Route 715.
