All-star split
SCHUYLKILL HAVEN - When it comes to all-star games, it's mostly about the final curtain call for senior athletes.
It's also about being teammates with players you've battled against your entire career.Schuylkill County has been showcasing the best of the girls and boys basketball players for 42 consecutive years in the Senior Charity Bowl hosted by Penn State Schuylkill Campus with proceeds going to the Kiwanis, Lions and Rotary clubs of Pottsville."It's all for a great cause," said two-time past Lions president Eric Rismiller who is also Pottsville Area's Athletic Director as he sat at courtside enjoying the games from beginning to end. "It brings the players together, and they seem to enjoy each other."Surely there was fun at the end - ala Phi Slamma Jama. The best of the dunks coming from North Schuylkill's senior 6-6 Tevin Murray who hustled to the event after pitching for the Spartans in a Schuylkill League Baseball game late in the day at Pine Grove. Murray slammed home three dunks after entering the game with only six minutes to play. But the dunk that received a 10 on the cheer-scale came from 5-7 Tanner Gerchak in the final 12 seconds. Three of Gerchak's teammates hoisted him over the rim, and the Pottsville senior provided the obligatory slam, bringing all to a roaring laughter. The games found the South girls taking a 62-46 decision and the North boys scoring a 71-57 victory."I had a ball," smiled Panther Valley's Brianna Picht, who played for the North.Certainly Marian's Vanessa Whitecavage sucked in all the excitement. "This was awesome, I know a lot of the girls on (both) teams. When you get selected it's such great thrill."Whitecavage finished with eight points. Whitecavage's high school teammate Savana Krusinsky was selected, but was unable to play. The biggest highlight of the game came right after the completion of the girls contest. The 2nd Annual Schuylkill League Player of the Year awards were presented to Minersville's junior standout Abby Schoffstall and Pottsville's Jordan Melochick. The league coaches vote on the winners. The awards are sponsored by Orthopedic Doctors of Pottsville; Dr. Brayford and Dr. Phillips. The girls award is named in honor of the late William "Babe" Conroy, one time sports editor of the Evening Herald and Hazleton Standard-Speaker. Conroy passed away in February of 2014. The boys award is named in honor of former Mahanoy Area's standout coach Mickey Holland. Holland is one of Pennsylvania's all-time winningest coaches. The boys contest was all about the North."I'm just so happy to be named to the team," said Marian's Aaron DeAngelo.DeAngelo's teammate JonWaitko said it was a "privilege to be a part of the game. It was so much fun, and I loved every second of it."Also in uniform was Panther Valley's Matt Hudicka, a standout three-sport athlete for the Panthers. Tamaqua's Russell Blaker was unable to make the contest because of a commitment to the Tamaqua baseball team.Sadie Creswell of Pottsville was the girls top scorer with 18 points. The top scorer in the boys game was Nativity's Derek James with 11.
