A Schuylkill County man was sentenced to a state prison term Monday on burglary, theft and other counts in Carbon County court.

Michael James Kieffer Jr., 31, of Coaldale, was sentenced by Judge Steven R. Serfass to serve a total of 12 to 60 months in a state correctional institution on charges criminal attempt-burglary, receiving stolen property, retail theft and persistent disorderly conduct. He also faces a big restitution bill.Kieffer was charged for his part in a June 30, 2014, burglary at a residence along West Patterson Street in Lansford. Various tools and building materials were taken valued at $23,410. He also was charged with retail theft for an incident at the Family Dollar Store in Lansford on March 3, 2014, and for disorderly conduct on March 2, 2014, at Patterson and Center streets in Lansford. He previously pleaded guilty to the charges.Kieffer had applied for placement in the state's Intermediate Punishment Program but decided not to pursue that option, according to defense attorney Paul J. Levy. Levy said Kieffer feels he would get more help by being sentenced to a straight term with a "long tail" on it.Kieffer said he feels he would do better with the longer sentence. In the state IPP, the term runs for two years total, with some time in prison, other time in inpatient rehab programs and then release to a halfway house. Kieffer will be under supervision for at least 60 months.In addition to the prison term, Serfass ordered Kieffer to make restitution of $1,705, which is half his share as there is a co-defendant in the case, get both drug and alcohol and mental health evaluations, zero tolerance imposed on drug and alcohol use, supply a DNA sample, pay court costs of about $1,000, and pay a $50 per month supervision fee while on parole. He was given credit for 178 days already spent in jail on the charges.
