A Tamaqua Area School Board director has called into question a scheduled wrestling tournament next month because he said it could interfere with church attendance.

The board's Auxiliary Committee on Tuesday approved the participation of the Tamaqua wrestling team at the 2016 Tony Iasiello Memorial Junior High Classic Tournament to be held at Parkland High School Feb. 13-14.A vote was required by the committee to place a resolution on the agenda of the Jan. 19 board meeting.Before the vote, board President Larry Wittig questioned why the tournament had to be held on a Sunday.Assistant Superintendent Ray Kinder said, "It would probably be a couple of kids."Regardless, Wittig said, "It's a matter of principle."Further, Wittig said he believes the matter is a "bad precedent to discourage church attendance."
