A new tradition is beginning in Lehighton Area School District thanks to the Class of 1964.

The group donated a bronze "Spirit Bell," about 20 inches high, to the district for use at any academic or extracurricular activity it chooses.Travis Gerould said the class, which still has around 40 members who meet on a monthly basis, wanted to do something for the high school that would increase school spirit.The bell was delivered to the district offices on Thursday morning."We raised $4,305, all through class donations, and put it into this project," Gerould said."We're a really tight knit group who feel a great deal of pride for Lehighton. This bell will be around for years to come and we hope it brings the students and district joy when they use it."District staff including high school Principal Craig Reichl and Superintendent Jonathan Cleaver were on hand Thursday to accept the bell.Lehighton High School is inscribed on the bell as well as the Indian logo and the more modern "L" with an arrow through it.To make it easy to move, the bell is mounted on a mobile cart made by Carbon Career and Technical Institute students."We really want the students to be the guardians," Gerould said.Dedication of the bell, which was custom made in Ohio, is scheduled for Meet The Tribe night in August.
