Game commission kills bear cub after it scratches girl

MOUNT UNION (AP) - The Pennsylvania Game Commission has euthanized a bear cub after it scratched a girl who was apparently trying to coax the animal back into the woods.

But Wildlife Conservation Officer Bert Einodshofer tells WJAC-TV the teen spooked the bear when she ran after it, accidentally cornering the bear in a fenced-in area.

That's when the bear clawed the girl on the back of the leg.

This happened Thursday in Mount Union.

The cub climbed a tree but was tranquilized and brought down. The animal was euthanized to prevent it from harming other animals or humans.

Game commission rules require animals be tested for rabies if they attack humans. That can only be done after the animal has died.

It doesn't appear this animal was rabid, however.
