Driver pulled from burning car

A motorist escaped death Wednesday morning after his car struck a tree and rolled several times bursting into flames with him inside. The crash occurred just before 6 a.m. as the male was traveling north on SR93, in Banks Township, Carbon County, at a high rate of speed. As the driver was descending the Broad Mountain near the PennDOT shed he lost control, leaving the right berm climbing a small embankment and impacting with and snapping off a tree. The car re-entered the roadway rolling and flipping numerous times before coming to rest on its wheels nearly 300 feet from the initial point of impact and fully involved in flames. Several passers-by were able to pull the driver to safety, dragging him across the roadway where he was treated for his injuries. A short time later he was flown via PennStar helicopter to a Lehigh Valley area trauma center. Responding was the Weatherly Fire Company. The roadway was reduced to one lane during the incident. State police at Hazleton are investigating the accident.
