Legion auxiliary recognizes essay, scholarship winners
The Shoemaker-Haydt Lehighton American Legion Post 314 Auxiliary recognized essay winners and the recipient of the Past President’s Health and Medical Science scholarship recipient recently.
The scholarship winner was Faith Leesandra Yeakel, who graduated this month from Lehighton High School. She plans to attend Messiah University to pursue a Bachelor of Science degree in nursing and then continues studies for three years for anesthesia.
The daughter of Diana and Shawn Yeakel, she was highly recommended by her school, her pastor and the Legion auxiliary.
She helped the auxiliary with the children’s Christmas and Easter egg parties.
Her school activities included playing field hockey for four years, track and field for four years, marching band, jazz band, National Honor Society, Future Business Leaders of America and volunteering in the community.
The $500 scholarship is given by the four-county council, made up of Lehigh, Monroe, Carbon and Northampton counties.
Noah Lusch, Chase Bokan, Jerome Scarpati, all of Lehighton, were the essay winners from Lehighton Legion Post 314.
Noah, a seventh grader at Lehighton Middle School, won in the seventh and eighth grade division. He is the son of Kimberly and Michael Lusch.
Chase Bokan, a six grader in Lehighton Middle School, won in the fifth and sixth grade division on the auxiliary level and won on the Four-County Council level
He also won second place in his class for the state.
He is the son of Frank and Deanna Bokan.
Jerome Scarpati of Lehighton, a third grader at Lehighton Elementary School, won in the 3rd and 4th grade division and also won in four-county council. He is the son of Veronica and Jerome Scarpati.
The essay winners were honored at a dinner and received a monetary award and a certificate.
