Fillies edge Weatherly

ORWIGSBURG - Marian’s Morgan Kelly turned in another amazing performance on Friday.

And nobody could possibly know she wasn’t feeling well.

The talented junior struck out 15, allowed just two hits and walked only one in guiding the Fillies to a 2-1 victory over Weatherly in a District 11 Class 1A semifinal game at Blue Mountain.

The win didn’t come easy for Kelly, who engaged in a pitching duel with senior Weatherly ace Madisyn vonFrisch. Von Frisch was sharp, too, giving up only three hits and striking out eight.

Kelly also helped her own cause with a whistling triple in the bottom of the seventh.

In all candidness, Kelly and Marian did have some help in gaining the win in the form of Weatherly errors - five of them, to be exact. Two of them resulted in Marian runs.

This was the third time Kelly and vonFrish faced each other. In their most recent matchup, Marian eked out a 1-0 win.

“It just came down to a couple of plays here and there, and fortunately we got the last one at the end to win,” said Marian head coach Joe DeAngelo.

Kelly, who DeAngelo referred to as a “power pitcher,” looked untouchable in the first six innings. Until then she had given up only one hit. She had no walks. At one point, she had six consecutive strikeouts.

“I was sick the past two days and actually I was to the doctor’s yesterday,” said Kelly. “After the fourth or fifth inning, I started feeling it.

“At the end, we came together as a team. It was more exciting because everybody was great in the dugout and there was more energy.”

Marian went ahead 1-0 in the second inning when junior Gracie Gallagher blasted a line drive past first base. There was an error on the play, letting Gallagher show off her speed and make a tour of the bases.

Admitting it’s one of the biggest hits of her career, Gallagher said, “It felt really good to hit that. It helps out the team being the first run.”

“We all really came together as a team. We had some good hits, even though we hadn’t scored a lot. I think we really came together and (played) really good defense.”

The Wreckers tied it in the top of the seventh. Kelly Michaels walked and stole second, then scored on a single by sophomore Rachel Rosenlund.

In the bottom of the seventh, with one out, Kelly drilled a triple to right-center - her second hit of the night. She scored on a mishandled ball with two outs to give the Fillies their win.

Weatherly head coach William Bartel was proud that his team came this far this season.

“The girls grew so much since February,” said Bartel. “I’m real proud of the way they hung in there. Even in the top of the seventh, they wouldn’t lie down. They crawled back.

“Madisyn is fantastic. Morgan, on the other hand, she is what she is. She’s a good pitcher.”

Bartel admitted defense played a key role in the contest.

“They played good defense,” Bartel said of Marian. “They made all the plays. We (didn’t).”

NEXT UP ... Marian, seeded second in Class 1A, will face top seed Tri-Valley on Tuesday in the championship game at a site to be announced. Kelly said she’s looking forward to meeting Tri-Valley. “I know most of the girls and I play with them. Some of them are graduating, so I’m looking forward to playing on the field with them one more time.”

NOT DISAPPOINTED ... Weatherly’s Bartel displayed no chagrin after his team lost to Marian. “We’re ecstatic with the way the season finished.” He said the girls have showed incredible progress throughout the season. He said there were girls that joined the team this year who “haven’t played in four years, in five years, or ever.” He has four seniors he’ll lose through graduation.

STRANDED ... Marian had opportunities to score throughout the game, stranding eight runners through the first six innings - including two each in the first and fifth frames. Only one person was left on base by Weatherly, and that was in the first inning.
