Local Roundup: Results from May 8

Panther Valley gave Rich Evanko his 100th-career coaching victory with a shutout against Marian on Monday.

Marian’s softball team, meanwhile, clinched a division title with a win, while Northwestern and Palmerton both gained victories in baseball and softball.

BASEBALL

Marian-Panther Valley

Panther Valley head coach Rich Evanko gained his 100th-career victory after the Panthers rolled to a 15-0 Schuylkill League decision over Marian.

Brad Hood and Michael Pascoe both finished 4-for-4 at the plate, while Hood also pitched a four-inning two-hitter.

Hood, who struck out nine and walked three, collected five RBIs while Pascoe homered, hit a triple, scored four times and drove in three.

PV (17-1; 11-1) also received two hits from Chase Weaver, Brody Breiner and Andrew Kokinda. Breiner scored three runs and had two RBIs, while Weaver crossed home twice.

Cody Orsulak also connected for a two-run homer.

Eric Hinkle and Mike Gelatko had the only hits for the Colts (9-8; 5-6).

Jim Thorpe-Tamaqua

Jim Thorpe scored in each of the first five innings and cruised to a 10-1 Schuylkill League victory over Tamaqua.

Jack Edwards pitched a four-hitter, walking two and striking out three in his seven innings of work.

Nikolas Schwartz had two hits and knocked in four runs for the Olympians, who improved to 6-13 overall and 3-8 in the league.

The winners also received two hits and three runs from Garrett Lienhard, while Chip Baldassano finished with a pair of hits, two runs and an RBI. Evan Murphy added a hit and two RBIs.

For the Blue Raiders, now 8-7 and 5-6, Mason Ligenza had a hit and an RBI.

Palmerton-No. Lehigh

Palmerton closed its regular season with a convincing 12-2 Colonial League victory over Northern Lehigh at Bryfogle Field.

The Blue Bombers snapped a 2-2 tie with a four-run third inning to finish its schedule with a 13-6 overall record and an 11-6 mark in the league.

Jacob Grammes finished 3-for-4 with two runs and three RBIs, while Daniel Lucykanish, Chase Reph, and Cole Serfass all had two hits. Reph scored twice and knocked in two runs, with Lucykanish adding a pair of runs and an RBI. One of Serfass’s hits was a triple, plus he scored once and drove home a run.

The winners, who will return to action Friday in the league playoffs, also received a hit and two RBIs from Derek King. Trey Sterling and Cameron Pengelly both chipped in with a hit and two runs.

Reese Lipsky had two hits and an RBI for the Bulldogs, now 3-16 and 3-13, while Jack Tosh added a hit and an RBI.

Catasauqua-N’western

Northwestern ended its regular season on a strong note, gaining a 12-2 Colonial League victory over Catasauqua at DeSales University.

Josh Farber had a triple and two-run single for the Tigers, who won eight of their last nine games and finished 13-7 overall and 11-6 in the league.

Josh Lichman added a pair of hits and two RBIs, while Sam Mauro added a hit and scored two runs.

Northwestern will now participate in the league playoffs, which begin on Friday.

For the Roughies, now 4-15 and 3-14, Bryce Emery finished with two hits.

Mahanoy-Weatherly

Joe Noraka had four hits, one a triple, and knocked in two runs to help lead Mahanoy Area to a 14-4 Schuylkill League victory over Weatherly.

The Bears also received two doubles, two runs and two RBIs from Lucas Karnish.

Klaus Eroh and Nathan Tripp both finished with two hits and an RBI for the Wreckers, who fell to 3-15 overall and 1-11 in the league.

Mahanoy starting pitcher Levi Terry struck out nine in four innings as his team improved to 2-15 and 1-11.

SOFTBALL

Jim Thorpe-Tamaqua

Hailey Williams homered twice to help Tamaqua outscore Jim Thorpe, 16-9, in a Schuylkill League contest.

Williams finished 4-for-5 with four runs and three RBIs.

The Blue Raiders, who took control with an eight-run third inning, also received three hits - one a homer - and four RBIs from Paige Bumbulsky.

Veronica Scott added two hits, three runs and two RBIs to the winning effort, while Kolbe Robb and Megan Lavine both chipped in with a hit and two RBIs.

The Olympians were led by Oleksa McAndrew and Allie Skirmcovsky, who each ended with two hits, two runs and two RBIs. Tara McLean also added two hits, a pair of runs and an RBI. One of McLean’s hits was a homer.

Tamaqua improved to 5-12 overall and 3-9 in the league. Thorpe slipped to 1-16 and 0-13.

Marian-Panther Valley

Marian clinched the Schuylkill League Division 3 championship with a 4-0 victory over Panther Valley.

Morgan Kelly pitched a five-hit shutout, striking out 11, to send the Fillies into the league playoffs.

Kelly also blasted a home run in the third inning and finished with a pair of hits.

The winners, now 14-4 overall and 8-4 in the league, also received a triple from Malina Letcher.

Mikayla Yuricheck and Kaidence Krapf both had two hits for the Panthers (6-12; 3-9). One of Yuricheck’s hits was a double.

Mahanoy-Weatherly

Madisyn vonFrisch pitched a one-hitter and struck out 10 to lead Weatherly to a 10-0 Schuylkill League victory over Mahanoy Area.

vonFrisch also excelled at the plate, finishing with two hits and an RBI.

Kelly Michaels collected three hits and knocked in three runs for the Wreckers, who improved to 11-5 overall and 7-5 in the league.

The loss dropped Mahanoy to 2-15 and 1-11.

Marla Freiwald pitched a three-hit shutout to lead Blue Mountain to an 8-0 Schuylkill League victory over Lehighton.

Freiwald walked just one and struck out 16.

Anna Laughlin had a single, double, triple and three RBIs for the Eagles, while Lindsay Gibson added two doubles, two runs and an RBI.

For the Indians, who fell to 7-11 overall and 4-9 in the league, Maggie Pagotto had a triple, while Addison Chavanic and Amy Dwojewski each added a hit.

Blue Mountain upped its overall mark to 16-3, and its league record to 12-1.

Catasauqua-N’western

Northwestern used a five-run fifth inning to help gain a 6-3 Colonial League victory over Catasauqua in a game played at Patriots Park.

The Roughies jumped out to an early lead on Nayeska Miranda’s three-run homer in the first, but after that Tiger pitcher Peyton Neumoyer allowed just three hits and no runs the rest of the way. Neumoyer ended the contest with five strikeouts.

Sage Toman had two hits, including a two-run double in the fifth. Abby Dunstan, who also finished with two hits, contributed an RBI hit in the fifth.

Northwestern, now 17-2 overall and 14-2 in the league, also received two hits, a run and an RBI from Marissa Christman.

Steph Becker had two hits, one a double, to pace Catty (7-11; 5-11).

Vanessa DeFalco pitched a two-hit shutout to lead Stroudsburg to a convincing 11-0 Eastern Pennsylvania Conference victory over Pleasant Valley.

Mandy Gizzo paced the Mounties with two hits and four RBIs, while Melissa Elko finished with two hits and an RBI.

The Bears received hits from both Brianca Pridham and Danica Getz.

PV ended regular-season play at 10-10 overall and 9-7 in the EPC. Stroudsburg is now 11-6 and 10-6.

Teammate Sam Ratti reached base via a walk.

Palmerton ended its regular season with an 8-1 Colonial League victory over Northern Lehigh.

The Bombers finished 13-7 overall and 10-6 in the league. The Bulldogs are 11-7 and 8-7.

Both teams will be participating in the league and district playoffs.
