JT girls take 1st

The Jim Thorpe girls track and field team earned the team title at its annual Invitational on Thursday.

The Olympians, led by Kaila O’Connor and Celia Rodrigues-Gonzalez, registered 116 team points to outpoint runner-up Blue Mountain (98 1/3).

In the boys competition, JT ended second behind Shamokin. The Indians finished with 139 points to the Olympians’ 109.

Rodrigues-Gonzalez captured first-place finishes in both the 1600 and 3200, and also was a member of the winning 3200 relay team. Her winning time of 5:26.38 in the 1600 set a new area best this season, as did the relay team’s mark of 10:07.86. Joining with Rodrigues-Gonzalez on that winning team were Gabby Cinicola, Nicole Carroll and Aubrey Bonner.

O’Connor also had a good day on the track, winning both the 100 and 300 hurdles. She finished with a time of 12.58 in the 100, and crossed the line in 43.84 in the 300 hurdles.

The Thorpe girls also got a first-place finish from Katrin Cavanaugh in the pole vault. Cavanaugh cleared 10-9 to win the event.

Marian’s Fatikha Tikhtova grabbed a pair of first-place finishes, winning the high jump and long jump, while also placing third in the triple jump (33-2 1/2). Tikhtova cleared 5-7 in the high jump, matching her own area best, and won the long jump (16-6).

Marian’s Carly Minchhoff was second in the javelin with a throw of 115-8.

Tamaqua’s Katelynn Fredericks won the 100 hurdles, crossing the line in 17.21. The Northwestern team of Bailey Murray, Carsyn Van Norman, Abby Pomajevich and Kaia Grantham also won the 400 relay with a time of 51.53. Van Norman was also second in the 100 (13.04).

Angelina Klein was second in the 3200 with a time of 12:29.31, while the Tiger team of Pomajevich, Naomi Glassberg, McKensey Miller and Megan Fornwalt also placed third in the 1600 relay with a time of 4:21.04. Grace Yost was third in the pole vault, clearing 8-3.

Zeeshan Issifu and Ridge Snyder both recorded wins for the Olympians in the boys competition. Issifu, who was also second in the 100, won the 400 with a time of 50.48, topping his previous area best of 50.96. Snyder won the 800 with a time of 1:59.57.

Jim Thorpe also won both the 400 and 3200 relay events. Issifu, Andrew Coolbaugh, Andrew Warner and Joshua Louk took the 400 relay with a time of 43.89. Snyder, Ryan Bailor, Jordan Remmel and Ivan Turczeniuk won the 3200 relay with a time of 8:16.31, which also established a new area best.

The team of Bailor, Snyder, Issifu and Louk placed second in the 1600 relay with a time of 3:28.00, another area best.

Northwestern’s Cayden Kuhns won the pole vault, clearing 11-3.

HARD TO BEAT

... The Jim Thorpe girls showcased their depth with a number of athletes landing in the top three. Nicole Carroll was second in the 400 (1:01.16) and 800 (2:28.04), while Aurora Van Auken placed second in the 100 hurdles (17.35) and Mara Levins was second in the discus (97-10). Bonner also placed third in the 800 (2:29.46).

SOLID DAYS

... Bailor placed second in the 1600 with a time of 4:30.63, while Turczeniuk was third in the 800 (2:03.32) and Justin Yescavage placed third in the 100 hurdles (16.52). Kolby Cavanaugh also placed third in the triple jump with a leap of 40-2 1/2. Gavin Nelson (high jump, 6-3) and Andrew Diehl (triple jump, 40-3 1/2) were both second for the Tigers. Panther Valley’s Brad Jones placed in the javelin with a throw of 167-11 to top his previous area best of 163-6, while teammate Austin Hadley was third in the shot put with a mark of 44-8. Tamaqua’s Tegan Devlin (pole vault, 10-3) and Marian’s Jesse Rodino (discus, 132-2) were both third.
