Split Rock seeks variance for signs

Split Rock Resort in Kidder Township is moving into the 21st century, according to their new managing director, Lee Bowden.

On Monday, Split Rock will present a request for a number of variances before the Kidder Township Zoning Hearing Board for the installation and operation of two electronic signs. The township zoning ordinance does not permit the use of signs which are "animated, sequential, flashing or oscillating."The resort also needs several variances with regard to the placement of the signs. The intention is to place the two signs near the entrances to the resort. Both signs would be inside the gates and will be placed where other signs are currently located.Unfortunately, the existing signs, which have been in their current locations for many years, do not meet the ordinance either.Under current ordinances, signs are not permitted within the right of way and are required to be located on the same premises to which the sign refers. There are also a number of other issues related to the number of signs permitted on any one street frontage and the setback requirements."These signs are just like large-screen TVs," Bowden said. "They are very easy to program, and since many township residents come through the gates on a regular basis, they could be used to the benefit of township residents as well as the resort."The signs measure 5 feet 6 inches wide and 3 feet 5 inches high. With the pedestal, the overall height is 7 and a half feet."Since the signs will be located within the gates, residents would not see much more than a reflection possibly from outside the gate," said George Hall, Director of Sales and Marketing for the resort."The signs can be dimmed and turn off after 2 a.m. if required," Hall said. "Yes, I see these signs as a way for Split Rock to advertise events, specials in our restaurants and entertainment in The Thirsty Moose or at the Bar at Mountain Laurel. But I also see them as a way to notify the residents of Split Rock and Lake Harmony of the fire company's pancake breakfast, the upcoming State Fireman's convention and fundraisers. Also, notify drivers of road conditions, accidents, really anything."Bowden is especially excited about all of the changes coming to Split Rock and hopes to see a huge effect on Kidder Township as well."Split Rock Resort is the largest taxpaying organization in Kidder Township. With the improvements here we will increase that tax base as well. As we grow and improve, so will the property values in the area."Hall said, "Split Rock has just had its most successful Presidents weekend in a long time. And we are just starting to make changes, so the best is ahead of us."The Zoning Hearing board meeting is scheduled for 6 p.m. Monday at the Lake Harmony Volunteer Fire Company at 126 Lake Harmony Road.
