Carbon to begin repairs

Carbon County is working with its insurance provider to determine how repairs to the administration building will take place.

Two weeks ago, the building, located just off Route 209 in Jim Thorpe, was damaged after a water leak from a toilet in the Information Technology department.

All three floors of the building were affected, with ceiling tiles coming down, insulation getting soaked and carpeting being flooded. As a result, many of the offices in the building were closed for business that week, while the whole building was closed for two days to clear the air in the building.

On Thursday, Commissioner Rocky Ahner said that the cleaning staff did a great job with getting a start on the cleanup so employees could resume operations in the affected offices.

However, much work is needed to repair the building. Ahner estimates that that figure will come in around $100,000 or more.

Following the discovery of the leak, a mitigation company was called in to dry out the building. This included tearing down ceiling tiles, vacuuming up water and fanning out carpets and moving things around.

After that, the county cleaning staff came in and did a deep clean to try and make suer it was safe for employees to return while the county works with the insurance adjuster on creating a game plan on how the repair work will take place.

The county hopes to receive the information, as well as the cost this week.

Ahner said he stressed to the insurance adjuster that the county is a “five day a week” operation and repair work needs to work around the offices, whether that means repairs happen on weekends or evenings after business is done for the day.

In addition, the elevator, which has been down since October, is expected to get repaired beginning this week as well with an estimated completion date of April 7.

Work on the administration building roof and HVAC system is also currently underway and is expected to be completed in June.
