Weissport residents air concerns about bridge
Weissport Borough Council heard concerns Monday about the ongoing construction to the Route 209 bridge.
Resident Troy Green presented council members with photographs and descriptions of safety issues near his home.Green said large pieces of concrete fell from pillars onto the sidewalk and road signs were blown onto his property last week, adding that the debris was left unattended for several days without the contractor, J. D. Eckman Inc., making cleanup efforts."Why didn't they clean up afterward?" he asked. "If this is happening now, what's going to happen when things really get going?"Green continued expressing his concern over liability if someone were to be injured on the sidewalk adjacent to his property.Council President Gene Kershner said the contractor would be contacted regarding the incident and other safety concerns.Mayor Jonathan Troutman echoed Kershner."The contractor wants to know about problems right away," Troutman said. Also on the subject of borough bridge maintenance, Troutman confirmed to council that a medical and emergency lane would remain open on the Weissport bridge once repair efforts begin.Council member Arlan Moyer Sr. presented those in attendance with information regarding the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection's upcoming workshop Flood Protection: Meeting Many Challenges. Moyer requested that he and borough employee Pete Pywar be authorized by borough council to attend the workshop next month. As part of the request, Moyer asked that the borough compensate Pywar since his attendance would require his missing two days work.Kershner expressed his support of having the borough represented and felt as though compensating Pywar was warranted."I feel we should compensate Pete for two days at the state flood prevention meeting," he said. Before seconding the motion to approve this compensation, council member Brenda Leiby stated her concern regarding the funding for Pywar's attendance."I wish we knew what was in the budget but, yeah, I'll second it," she said. "We didn't get a treasurer's report."In other matters, council voted to approve $100 donations to both the Lehighton Public Library and the United Veterans Organization. The 2014 Weissport Recreation Committee activity list was approved with emphasis on the April 12 Easter egg hunt for the children and grandchildren of borough residents.
