Lehighton man faces DUI charge

A Lehighton man has been charged with driving under the influence of Xanax while his driving privileges were already suspended for a previous DUI conviction.

James Eric Fisher also faces a slew of violations for driving an unregistered vehicle without a license.Palmerton police said they pulled over Fisher's vehicle around 9:30 p.m. June 21 in the borough after observing him driving 51 in a 25 mph zone.During the traffic stop, Fisher was unable to produce photo identification for officers. He allegedly told them that his license had been suspended because of a previous DUI conviction.Police were also able to establish that Fisher had taken a license plate from another vehicle and fraudulently placed it on his 2003 Hyundai Elantra so that he could drive it.Based on his behavior, police suspected that Fisher may have been under the influence. They asked him to perform a series of field coordination exercises, where he also appeared to be impaired.He allegedly admitted to police at that point that he takes the anti-anxiety prescription drug Xanax.
