A black granite monument now stands at the Penn Forest Recreation Park to salute the township’s veterans.
It stands over 36 inches tall on its black granite base, features a flag and eagle sketch, and the emblems of the U.S. Armed Forces.
Former supervisor Judy Knappenberger proposed the monument in 2021 to current supervisors, who funded the project.
She guided the process through the choices of art and words for the stone, then worked with Walters’ Monument, through COVID delays, until the stone arrived and the art and words etched.
The township had its maintenance crew prepare and pour a concrete footer, then on Jan. 20 the stone was mounted into place in its new home between two flagpoles at the park.
In the future, the monument may be flanked by other markers, and urns to place flowers in.
Dedication of the monument will be in the spring.
