Fans ready to devour 49ers, game goodies

The Philadelphia Eagles have made it to the playoffs, and many plan to tune in to the 3 p.m. game Sunday.

But what’s a football game without food to snack on?

Area eateries and grocery stores are expecting an increase in business because many residents are rooting for the Eagles, who host the San Francisco 49ers in the NFC Championship Game. The winner advances to the Super Bowl on Feb. 12.

“When the ‘home’ teams are in it to win it we definitely see increases a few days before the Big Game! The Eagles are a local favorite and we will have some extra special promos going on,” said Anthony Gigliotti, Boyer’s executive vice president of sales and marketing.

Boyer’s has stores in Tamaqua, Lansford and other locations throughout the region. And at each site, Gigliotti said employees will be busy preparing subs, chicken wings, and meat and cheese trays.

“We add in some Eagle cakes from the bakery, some shrimp rings from the seafood department,” Gigliotti said, “We display all kinds of finger foods to make it easy to shop fast and save money.”

Boyer’s Food Markets also will give away five football jerseys for the Super Bowl - winners can choose from the Eagles’ DeVonta Smith or Pittsburgh Steelers’ Najee Harris.

When it comes to football season, people just enjoy watching the games - and eating, said Cori Citro, owner of Tommy’s Subs in Jim Thorpe.

So no matter what team is playing, takeout business is always brisk.

“With any playoff, you always expect it to be busier,” Citro said.

Pizza and hoagies are always popular choices. The eatery’s cheesesteaks are another hit, and come in three different styles: Tommy’s, Philly and Delmonico, he said.

Ashley Flower, a spokeswoman for The Giant Company, said Giant Food stores - including one in Lehighton - are all about tackling orders for the Eagles playoff against the San Francisco 49ers.

“We’re very much getting ready for Sunday’s game, as we expect the next few days to be busy with customers preparing menus for their game watching parties,” Flower said.

She said that the local Giant stores offer a wide variety including Game Day appetizers like chicken wings, themed desserts, and Arooga’s soft pretzels topped with Buffalo chicken or crab.

Giant stores also expect to sell store-prepared, ready-to-eat foods for entertaining. Flower said popular items are deli platters and salads, along with hot dishes like pulled pork and fried chicken.

At Cindy’s Deli in Lehighton, owner Caitlin Moyer said football season usually means a jump in business.

But as the playoffs got underway, she said, it was common to see a “mad rush” just before closing time.

“I do actually find that a lot of people stop in to pick up some deli salads or lunchmeats to make their own sandwiches,” she said. “If they are anything like me or my family, we just like to have some pick food - not a formal meal.”

The deli isn’t open on Sundays - when the Eagles will play - but Moyer believes she’ll see folks picking up items to prepare.

“They might go with grab-and-go items like potato salad,” she said. “Growing up with my dad, we’d make a buffet and set it up with chips and dips and all kinds of snacks. You ate your way through the game.”
