Local Roundup: Results from Jan. 5

The Jim Thorpe and Marian boys basketball teams each picked up impressive wins in Schuylkill League play on Thursday.

Elsewhere, Northwestern recorded victories in wrestling and girls basketball action, while Tamaqua recorded a sweep in a swimming meet. The Northern Lehigh girls basketball team also recorded a win.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Blue Mountain-Jim Thorpe

Jim Thorpe turned a strong start into a 53-42 Schuylkill League victory over Blue Mountain to hand the Eagles their first Division 1 setback.

Kaiden Herron got the Olympians (5-6 overall; 2-2 SL) off to a good start, as he posted 11 of his game-high 17 points in the opening quarter to help Thorpe build a 21-7 lead.

Noah Rosahac prevented the Eagles from rallying, netting eight of his 10 points in the fourth quarter as the Olympians finished with a 20-point final frame following a two-point third quarter. Andrew Warner also added 10 points.

Isaac Thomas paced Blue Mountain (9-2; 4-1) with a team-high 12 points, while Carson Kerstetter finished with 11.

Mahanoy Area-Marian

In a key Schuylkill League Division 3 showdown, Marian put together a solid game to hand Mahanoy Area its first loss of the season with a 58-49 win at home.

Julius Currie sparked the Colts (4-6 overall), as Currie poured in a game-high 30 points in leading the hosts to staying unbeaten in league play at 3-0. Frank Valente added nine points.

Tanner Zawada paced the Golden Bears (9-2), who fell to 4-1 in league play, with a team-high 18 points. Jace Yedsena added 11.

North Schuylkill turned back Lehighton for a 46-31 Schuylkill League victory.

Zane Zulkowski led the Spartans (7-2; 4-1 SL) with 15 points, while Jake Keiter added 10.

Brayden Johnson scored seven of his team-high 11 points in the third quarter, but the Indians couldn’t close the gap and dipped under .500 (6-7; 1-4) for the season.

Salisbury-Northern Lehigh

Salisbury made the most of a solid start to hold off Northern Lehigh 52-46 Lehigh in Colonial League play.

The Falcons had a 24-18 halftime lead, as both teams tallied 28 points in the second half.

Thomas Lovelidge and Jake Zellin each scored 13 points apiece for Salisbury (2-8).

Bryce LoPinto paced Northern Lehigh (0-11) with 16 points. Connor Simms had 13 points, and Ethan Kunkle added 10 for the Bulldogs.

Saucon Valley broke open a close game in the third quarter en route to a 61-48 victory over Northwestern in Colonial League play.

The Tigers (5-5) trailed 24-20 at halftime, but Saucon Valley (9-1) outscored the hosts 16-8 in the third quarter to gain control.

Cydae Joseph-Davis led the Panthers with 15 points, while Jack Robertson added 12.

Mason Bollinger led the Tigers with 15 points, and Cayden Fitch added 12.

Host Pottsville built a double-digit halftime lead, and the Crimson Tide went on to a 65-50 victory over Panther Valley in a Schuylkill League Division 1 contest.

Pottsville (7-4; 4-0) took a 37-21 halftime lead. Rylen Matlock and Lytrel Montone each had 16 points for the Tide.

Chase Weaver led Panther Valley (7-3; 2-3) with 10 points.

Nativity cruised to an 80-30 Schuylkill League win over Weatherly.

The Green Wave (4-5; 2-2 Division 3) rolled to a 49-20 halftime lead and never looked back. Trey Keating led Nativity with a game-high 24 points with seven three-pointers, while Tyler Borden added 14.

Ian McLaurin led the Wreckers (1-8; 0-4) with 16 points.

Northern Lehigh pushed its winning streak to three games with a 49-30 Colonial League victory over Salisbury.

Katelynn Barthold and Aubrey Pollard led the Bulldogs (7-4; 4-2) with 15 points apiece. Dekota Barthold added 12 points.

Desiree Nales and Tula Reihman both finished with 12 points for the Falcons (0-9; 0-6).

Northwestern cruised to a 51-12 Colonial League win over Saucon Valley.

The Tigers (9-1; 5-1) took advantage of a 22-point second quarter to take a commanding 29-5 lead into halftime. Brook Balliet posted eight of her game-high 15 points in the second frame, while Cara Thomas added seven of her 13 points before the intermission.

Allison Cort led the Panthers (4-7; 2-5) with a team-high eight points.

Northwestern won win eight of the last nine bouts to come away with a 45-27 non-league victory over Panther Valley.

Nathan Geiger (133), Hunter Greenawalt (139), Luke Fugazzotto (160), Dalton Clymer (172), Jackson Bailey (189), Noah Schlofer (215) and Lucas Miller (285) all posted pins for the Tigers.

Micahel Cobb posted the Panthers’ lone contested victory with a decision at 127 pounds.

SWIMMING

Schuylkill Haven-Tamaqua

Tamaqua swept a Schuylkill League meet against Schuylkill Haven.

The Blue Raiders cruised to a 105-36 win over the hosts in the boys meet, with Jack Tharp and Stephen Behun each recording stellar performances on the day. The duo tied for first place in the 50 freestyle, while Tharp won the 100 fly and swam legs in the winning 200 medley and 400 free relay events, as Behun did the same in the two relays plus a first in the 100 free.

Alex Zehner (200, 500 free) posted multiple victories, while Vincenzio Valentine (diving) and Brandon Long (100 Back) also picked up wins.

Tamaqua posted a 102-66 win in the girls meet. Lexi Buchala (200IM, 500 Free) had a pair of wins, while Mia Jones (diving) and Lily McNutt (100 breaststroke) also added victories.

The Olympians’ Brody Schrantz led all scorers with 17 points, while both Josh Louk and Lee Edwards added 13 points apiece.

Werner paced the Blue Eagles with 15 points.
