A Slatington man has been charged with assaulting his girlfriend, state police say.

State police at the Bethlehem barracks say James McClafferty, 48, punched the woman in the face and threw her around in the kitchen of a residence in the 5000 block of Monroe County, Washington Township on Oct. 8.

The woman told police that they were arguing and when she tried to get her keys to leave that McClafferty punched her.

State police said the woman had a cut to her upper and lower lips, bruising on her left cheek, bruising to her right arm, and a laceration to her left forearm.

McClafferty faces charges of simple assault and harassment.

He is in the Lehigh County Jail in lieu of $25,000 cash bail, and scheduled to have a preliminary hearing Nov. 17 before District Judge Tom Creighton of Slatington.
