Nesquehoning donates money for hero flags
Nesquehoning will give $500 to the Hometown Heroes Banner program to help purchase American flags on poles with veteran banners.
On Wednesday, council approved the request, made by Councilwoman Lois Kuba, who is on the Hometown Heroes Banner campaign committee.
Kuba said that the historical society, VFW Post 8008 Auxiliary and Nesquehoning UVO have been working to add to the banner program because they feel American flags should be included with the banners.
There are approximately 180 Hometown Hero banners around Nesquehoning.
There were approximately 115 poles with banners that did not have flags on display when the campaign started and the group is looking for people to donate to help with the project.
“We feel every Hometown Hero veteran should be honored with an American flag,” she said.
American flags are hung on the poles in the town for major holidays, including Memorial Day, Fourth of July, Labor Day and Veterans Day by the borough crew and then removed after the holiday to preserve the flags.
Hometown Hero banners are displayed from Memorial Day through Veterans Day and then removed for the winter.
Kuba said the borough stores and cares for the flags so the donation will save the town money in the long run and that the flags should last for many years.
If you would also like to contribute to the Honoring Hometown Heroes campaign, you can do so by sending a check, made payable to the Nesquehoning VFW Auxiliary, to Mary Arieta, 118 E. Diaz Ave., Nesquehoning, PA 18240.
