County looks at pedestrian safety

Carbon County is partnering with Jim Thorpe to help cover engineering costs for potential $1 million project that would improve pedestrian safety in the downtown area.

On Thursday, the commissioners approved a commitment of $25,068 towards the engineering costs for a Multimodal Transportation grant application Jim Thorpe is submitting. The project is for vehicle and pedestrian safety, crosswalks, ADA curb cuts and widening the sidewalk area of the corral parking spaces on Lehigh Street.

Commissioner Chris Lukasevich said the money would come from the parking revenue.

Commissioner Rocky Ahner said that this would help with safety issues for pedestrians and visitors to the borough, which also serves as the county seat.

“The goal is to highlight the pedestrian mode of transportation for those walking and for motorists, while enhancing access for those of all abilities,” Borough Manager Maureen Sterner said last week.

The borough is applying for $967,894 toward the estimated $1.1 million project. The borough would cover $110,432, while the remaining funds would come from Carbon County, the Jim Thorpe Tourism Agency and the Pocono Mountain Visitors Bureau, all of which are partnering with the borough on the project.

The application is due by July 31 and will be up for consideration in November.
