The lone corner of Third Street and Lafayette Avenue in Palmerton without a stop sign will soon be getting one.
Palmerton Borough Council passed the first reading of an ordinance amendment that will add a stop sign at the northwest corner of the borough park, across from S.S. Palmer Elementary.
The request for the stop sign came from the school district, Borough Manager Donna McGarry said.
“It’s a three-way intersection, and two of the ways are currently are currently stopped,” McGarry said following Thursday’s meeting.
“The district asked that we add the third.”
Starting with the 2022-23 school year, the district will take over staffing of crossing guards around S.S. Palmer, and the stop sign request came out of brainstorming several ideas to make things safer as children are walking to school.
“We agree that sometimes when people come up there, when they come from Delaware Avenue to Third Street, they don’t know if they should stop or not,” McGarry said.
“And then there becomes a level of confusion. So if it would help the school district with the children crossing, it’s an added bonus to everybody.”
