Man who stole ambulance waives hearing

A Monroe County man who stole an ambulance in Bushkill has waived his right to a preliminary hearing.

Frantz Bernard, 33, of Tobyhanna, was set to have the hearing Tuesday before District Judge Michael Muth of East Stroudsburg.

According to the affidavit of probable cause filed by officer Chris Washo of the Stroud Area Regional Police Department in the case against Bernard:

At 5:04 p.m. May 24, Washo responded to the Lehigh Valley Hospital - Pocono in East Stroudsburg regarding the theft of a Bushkill BLS ambulance.

A Bushkill EMS employee reported the incident and said that they arrived at Lehigh Valley Pocono to drop a patient off at the emergency room, and when they returned to the ER entrance, their ambulance was gone.

Contact was then made with Lehigh Valley Pocono security, who reviewed video footage at the entrance of the ER, which captured Bernard get into the ambulance and drive away with it.

A police alert was then put out to the surrounding jurisdictions and Pennsylvania State Police Lehighton conducted a traffic stop on the ambulance in the area of Harrity Road and Interchange Road in Franklin Township, and Bernard was taken into custody.

Bernard has been charged with theft by unlawful taking or disposition, receiving stolen property, and unauthorized use of automobiles and other vehicles.

He remains incarcerated in the Monroe County Correctional Facility in lieu of $5,000 monetary bail, and is scheduled to have his case heard in the Monroe County Court of Common Pleas in July.
