Election: Mail-in ballots change numbers, leaders same

The numbers changed somewhat, but the results didn’t, in balloting for several offices that took place on Tuesday.

The Times News reported “unofficial” election totals as they appeared on the state’s website Wednesday morning, and, with mail-in votes, absentees and other ballots (provisional), those numbers were updated by the counties involved, including Monroe County, where an election official Wednesday updated us on election totals there.

In Monroe County provisional ballots will be counted Friday, but military ballots are not due back until May 24.

Here are the latest unofficial numbers being reported by the state:

7th District

Republican Lisa J. Scheller’s lead over Kevin W. Dellicker in the 7th Congressional District is now by 1,757 votes: 34,384 to 32,627. She will likely face incumbent Democrat Susan Wild in the general election. Wild’s complimentary vote totals are now listed at 63,186.

The district includes all of Carbon, Lehigh and Northampton counties and parts of Monroe County, including the townships of Eldred and Polk, and a portion of Ross Township.

The two candidates actually split the district, with Scheller leading by a 14,684 to 12,146 vote in Northampton County and having a 791 to 682 edge in Monroe County balloting.

Dellicker edged Scheller both in Lehigh, 15,759 to 15,224, and Carbon, 4,040 to 3,685.

8th District

In the 8th Congressional District, incumbent U.S. Rep. Matt Cartwright received 61,396 complimentary votes and will likely face Jim Bognet, who he defeated in 2020. Bognet led Tuesday’s primary by more than a 2-1 ratio - 45,589 to 20,789 - over former Hazleton Mayor Mike Marsicano.

In Monroe, Cartwright received 10,533 token votes and Bognet edged Marsicano there by a vote of 7,012 to 3,717.

The district includes all of Lackawanna, Pike and Wayne counties, parts of Luzerne County and parts of Monroe County consisting of the townships of Barrett, Chestnuthill, Coolbaugh, Hamilton, Jackson, Middle Smithfield, Paradise, Pocono, Price and a portion of Ross, Smithfield, Stroud, Tobyhanna and Tunkhannock and the boroughs of Delaware Water Gap, East Stroudsburg, Mount Pocono and Stroudsburg.

PA House

In balloting for the 176th District of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives, which includes the townships of Chestnuthill, Eldred, Hamilton, Jackson, Polk, Ross, Tobyhanna and Tunkhannock in Monroe County, Rep. Jack Rader, a Republican from Jackson Township seeking re-election, was unopposed and tallied 5,897 token votes.

He will go head-to-head in November with Democrat Hope Christman of Chestnuthill Township, who was unopposed within that party. Christman received 3,966 token votes.

PA Senate

In the 40th District balloting for the PA Senate, Republican Rosemary M. Brown, a current state representative from Middle Smithfield Township, and Democrat Jennifer Anne Shukaitis of Stroud Township were both unopposed Tuesday for the open seat being vacated by the retirement of Sen. Mario Scavello.

The latest totals show Brown received 19,484 token votes, and Shukaitis tallied 19,685 token votes.

In Monroe County, Brown tallied 11,737 votes while Shukaitis received 11,319 votes.

The district consists of all of Monroe County, and parts of Lackawanna and Wayne.
