Church continues election food tradition

Election Day is a day where people exercise their right to vote.

But for a Summit Hill church, it is also a day to showcase the ethnic foods that so many people grew up eating.

On Tuesday, St. Joseph Parish of the Panther Valley held its annual Election Day Luncheon, which included a variety of ethnic foods, from halupki and haluski to sausage and peppers and turkey barbecue.

“It’s always a sell out,” said the Rev. Bob George, pastor of St. Joseph. “All the food is homemade.”

George said that while the luncheon sells out every Election Day, the success is because of the support by both the residents who buy, and parishioners who volunteer before the election to prepare all the food.

“They come out and prepare. It’s days of preparing 8-10 pans of halupkis and other foods.”

The St. Joseph’s kitchen crew’s work paid off as residents filled the Rev. James Burdess Social Hall waiting to purchase their food.
