Bella, Max and the rest of their canine friends will soon have a place all to themselves in the west end of Palmerton.
On a unanimous measure, borough council on Thursday agreed to repurpose the West End Recreation Association Field for use as a dog park.
The field is located along Alley J above portions of the 800 and 900 blocks of Edgemont Avenue.
Councilman Andrew Hollywood explained why council chose this particular location for the dog park.
“We see an opportunity to repurpose this land,” Hollywood said. “There’s a really nice children’s playground area there.”
Hollywood noted there is a drainage system there, but some maintenance is needed.
There is no fence along what was the outfield area of the baseball field, so fencing would need to be installed, he said.
Hollywood said there would also be a two-gate system, which is common for most dog parks.
He said the plan is to fund the work with grants and private funding, with the hope that a recreation group would eventually be formed.
After the meeting, borough Manager Donna McGarry said the borough plans to seek funding for the work to complete the dog park.
“Since this project is in the very early stages, we haven’t settled on who the group would be or what they would be helpful with,” McGarry said.
McGarry said there is no official name for the park.
“At this point, the idea is new and we have plenty of planning and financing to line up before it gets opened,” she said.
