Cause undetermined in Nesquehoning multiunit fire

The cause is undetermined for the fire that displaced 17 residents Monday in Nesquehoning.

Fire Chief John McArdle said the blaze started at 139 W. Catawissa St., which is half of a duplex. It spread to the other side, 137, which has two apartments and to adjacent dwellings, 127, with two apartment, and 145.

The blaze broke out at 1:25 p.m. In addition to Nesquehoning departments, companies that responded included Lansford, Jim Thorpe, Lehighton, Weatherly, Summit Hill, Lehigh and Lausanne, Tamaqua Rescue, Lehighton Ambulance, Hometown Fire Police, and Carbon Emergency Management Agency.

In all, the Red Cross assisted six families, with a total of nine adults and 8 children. One was a single mom with a 4-year-old and a newborn, just 12 days old.

No one was injured, but families lost all their belongings.

Volunteers rushed to Meed’s UMC church to help displaced residents. The community responded with a crib, pet items and clothing. The church posted Wednesday that clothing items are no longer being accepted but people can donate gift cards and money to help the victims.

The church is also accepting cleaning supplies, including paper towels, tissues, ammonia, dishwashing soap, Murphy’s oil soap, disinfectant, hand soap and more. Contact the church at 126 W. Catawissa St. or call 570-669-9212.

The Sokol Club of Nesquehoning is also accepting donations.

Several GoFundMe accounts are set up, including 137 House Fire Nesquehoning organized by Sarah McG, one for just baby items by Rebecca Gottfried and Goren family house fire by Cindy Goren.

Cindy and Greg Goren have two sons, DeClan and Lochlan. Goren posted, “Thank you all so much for your generosity. We will get through this and rebuild our belongings and find a new place to call home. We are so grateful for everyone who has reached out and helped in one way or another.”
