Let the chimes ring
The clock at Meed's Memorial United Methodist Church in Nesquehoning has sat silent for nearly four months.
Now, the church needs the community's help to make its clock chime again. The congregation is currently asking for donations to help cover the cost of repairing the computer that controls the chimes. The maintenance for the clock this year is $795, but repairs are not covered under the maintenance.Pastor Kimberly Leskowich said that more than 1,000 letters have been distributed throughout the borough asking for help.Five area children also volunteered their time to hand-deliver letters to area residents."It's a community clock," Leskowich said. "It means a lot to the people. We want to preserve history and make sure we do right by its original intent."Cyndi Christman, a member of Meed's Memorial United Methodist Church, added that the clock tower has been a staple in the Nesquehoning community since 1889."It really is the town clock," she said, noting that she has heard stories of people using the chimes as a way to know when to get up or when to come in for the day.All money raised will go directly to the clock. Any excess will be placed in a special fund and used for future repairs and maintenance of the clock.Today, members of the congregation will be at Redner's Warehouse Market in Nesquehoning for a basket raffle and bake sale to raise money for the project. The drawing for the two baskets will take place at 7 p.m.Donations for the clock can be dropped off at the church on Wednesdays after 7 p.m. or by mailing it to Meed's Memorial United Methodist Church, 126 W. Catawissa St., Nesquehoning, PA 18240. Checks should be made payable to Meed's Clock Fund.
