The bridge lights are back on in Weissport
Weissport Borough Council President Arland Moyer told the council that after the March 21 council meeting, he again called PPL about the two bridge lights that have not worked for over two years.
“I spoke with Matt Rebuck, a regional manager for PPL. He said that after doing all kinds of research, back in 1971, the borough of Weissport had signed a contract with PPL that states they (PPL) would maintain the lights. So he had his foreman from Hazleton, Dan Yanek, and crew come down the next day and replace the bulbs with brand-new LED lights, free of charge.”
PPL will also now work with the borough at converting the rest of the lights within the borough to LED bulbs, which will cut the electric use almost in half. Council estimates they have about 36 lights that PPL will replace. Presently, the electric for the streetlights within the borough costs just over $600 a month.
“I have to email them and tell them what we need,” borough Secretary Jennifer Ketchledge added, “and they are going to replace them.”
Parking ordinances
Weissport council will begin updating and amending the parking ordinances for the borough. Some of the ordinances are old, dating as far back as 1968.
“For instance, we put up the ‘no parking’ signs, which I can enforce,” Councilman James Osborne said, “but right now, the fine is $5. These ordinances need to be amended to bring them up to date and consolidated.”
Copies of the ordinances were passed out to the rest of the council members for them to review, and then they will offer their suggestions at the next meeting.
Meeting change
Council voted to change their council meetings to be held just once per month, rather than twice as they were doing. The meetings will be held the first Monday of the month. If the first Monday has a holiday, then the meeting will be moved to the following Monday. Council has the option to add additional meetings as the need arises.
The change takes effect right away. The next meeting will be held May 2 at 7 p.m. There will be no meeting April 18.
