County parking booth needs to be replaced

A parking booth that sits at the entrance of the Carbon County parking lot in Jim Thorpe no longer meets the needs of the staff, officials said.

On Thursday, the board of commissioners vote to advertise for bids for the replacement of the current parking booth.

Commissioner Rocky Ahner said that estimates for the replacement project came in higher than anticipated because of the supply shortages and increased costs in construction materials.

He cited the cost of a two-by-four, which used to cost $1.97. Now that price floats around $7.

Commissioner Chris Lukasevich said that while the booth is antiquated, the county has the money through the parking fund to update it to meet the parking staff’s needs in the future.

He cited other projects, including collaborations with Reading and Northern Railroad and asphalting the lot.

“Again, (it’s to) make it safer, make it a better space for the employees who have to be out there in all weather elements,” Lukasevich said.

The new booth will be located against the guide rail at the back of the lot across from the entrance.
