Tamaqua Police Chief Michael Hobbs was assaulted by a borough man, a jury found.
During a Feb. 3 trial in the Schuylkill County Court of Common Pleas, Malik Zver, 21, was found guilty of aggravated assault, simple assault, disorderly conduct and harassment for a March 18, 2021 incident in Tamaqua. Another charge of harassment was withdrawn.
President Judge Jacqueline Russell presided. Sentencing is set for 1:30 p.m. March 9. A presentence investigation was ordered. Russell remanded Zver to the Schuylkill County Prison
Bail was set at 10 percent of $10,000.
Police were dispatched to the 300 block of West Broad Street for a report of a man who was out of control. Upon entry, police observed he appeared to be under the influence of something. He then began to knock on a door and scream at a woman after she opened it.
He was placed in a police car and taken to holding cell. Police say he threw an elbow at Hobbs, striking him in the face after taking off his shoes and being told to enter the cell. Zver was taken to the ground and put in the cell with handcuffs.
Hobbs went to the hospital for a broken nose.
