Woman charged with taking $90K from ex-boyfriend’s account
A Bethlehem woman has been charged with taking over $90,000 out of her ex-boyfriend’s checking account.
According to the affidavit of probable cause filed by Pennsylvania State Police in Lehighton in the case against Samantha Rodriguez:
At 4:36 p.m. Sept. 10, the victim, who lives in Ross Township, told police he discovered that money was withdrawn from his BB&T checking account without his permission.
The victim showed bank statements from his checking account from May 14, 2020, through Sept. 16, 2021, showing the unauthorized transactions, and copies of checks that were not authorized or signed by him.
The fraudulent checks were found to be made out to Rodriguez, 25, and cashed into her bank account.
The man said Rodriguez forged his signature on the checks, and also discovered that Rodriguez made multiple unauthorized purchases utilizing his bank debit card.
The victim said that a total of $90,460 was fraudulently taken out of his checking account by Rodriguez through multiple transactions.
The victim said that he dated Rodriguez for about two years, and during that time she had access to his BB&T checking account and his checks.
On Oct. 9, Rodriguez voluntarily came to PSP Lehighton for an interview and said when she resided with the victim, they had agreed to share the household bills.
During their relationship, she had become unemployed, at which time the victim agreed to take care of all the household bills.
Rodriguez explained that she set up their household monthly bills to be automatically withdrawn out of the victim’s BB&T checking account, and related that she had access to it during their relationship.
Rodriguez admitted to forging the victim’s name on the checks without his authorization.
She is charged with11 counts each of forgery and identity theft; and one count of theft by deception.
She is scheduled to have a preliminary hearing Feb. 25 before District Judge Colleen Mancuso of Brodheadsville.
