A heating issue at the Carbon County Prison has been resolved, officials said.
On Thursday, Commissioner Rocky Ahner announced that Trane was on site to repair the heat exchanger of the rooftop heating unit over the female block.
Initial projections were that the parts needed to fix the unit wouldn’t be in for approximately two months.
“Trane held true to their word,” Ahner said, noting that they said they were able to get the parts in quicker than anticipated.
The repair was completed by the end of the day on Thursday and Ahner confirmed that the unit was fixed on Friday.
The commissioners had to again vote to extend the disaster emergency declaration on Thursday as a requirement until the heating unit was repaired.
The heating unit over the female block broke on Jan. 12, causing issues with finding portable heaters and relocating some inmates into other parts of the prison.
A temporary heater was supplied by the Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency at the time.
Last week, the board approved an agreement with Trane to remove and replace the heat exchanger in the female unit at a cost of $6,631, which includes a one-year warranty for parts and labor.
