Nature trail hikes scheduled at Locust Lake, Beltzville

Officials at Tuscarora, Locust Lake and Beltzville state parks announced plans for hikes in the coming weeks.

Naturalist Robin Tracey will head a hike at Beltzville State Park in Carbon County on Thursday, Sept. 3 on the Christman and Cover Ridge trails. The hike is 6 miles and moderate in difficulty. The trails traverse through an evergreen forest and runs parallel to the park lake. Along the way is a beautiful waterfall.Participants are to meet in the Christman Trail parking lot, located off Pohopoco Drive, at 10:30 a.m. Bring a lunch or snacks. Call Tracey at 570-467-2506 between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. for more information. This is a dog friendly hike, but all pets must be leashed and get along with other pets and people. Shine only.Tracey will led a hike on the Crow, Lake View and Spirit trails on Saturday, Sept. 5, at 10:30 a.m. The hike is 9 miles in length and moderate in difficulty. This hike combines the best of the trails in Tuscarora State Park. Participants will meet in the Crow Trail parking lot off Tuscarora Mountain Road. Call Tracey for more information.This is a dog friendly hike with the usual conditions for pets. Shine only.There will be a live animal presentation on Sept. 5 at 6 p.m. at the Locust Lake State Park amphitheater. Pam Ulicny has been a biology teacher at Tri Valley High School for the past 18 years. Over this time she has collected a classroom full of different species of exotic invertebrates, amphibians, and reptiles for educational purposes.In her "Mrs. U-Zoo Revue", she will discuss specialized niches and adaptations biodiversity and responsible pet care. All children must be accompanied by an adult and the program will be moved to the program shelter in case of inclement weather.Conservation volunteer Pap Knauss will conduct a "Spirit of Tuscarora Trail" hike from 1 to 4:30 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 6. The trail is 4.5 miles in length and moderate in difficulty. The trail winds through several diverse habitats with a beautiful view of Tuscarora Lake. Participants should meet in the upper beach parking lot near the trailhead. Dogs are welcome with the usual conditions. Shine only.Tracey will lead a hike on the Oak Loop Trail at Locust Lake on Monday, Sept. 7. The trail is 3 miles in length and difficult. The trail loops around Locust lake and traverses up the mountain for a really great view of the forest below.Part of the hike includes the "Tree Identification Trail" created by one of the area Eagle Scouts.
