Schuylkill man jailed after fleeing police, ramming cars

A Schuylkill County man was jailed Monday after he fled police and rammed police cruisers.

State police at Schuylkill Haven said Ralph R. Rhody, 54, of 221 Main St., village of Joliet, Hegins Township, is facing charges of attempted homicide, aggravated and simple assault, recklessly endangering another person, fleeing and eluding police, driving under the influence (DUI) of alcohol, criminal mischief, and various traffic code violations.According to troopers the incident began about 7 a.m. when Trooper Timothy Rymarkiewicz was investigating an aggravated assault stemming from a domestic incident involving Rhody and his girlfriend, who was not named by police, and occurring along Walnut street in Hegins Township.Durnig the assault Rhody allegedly threatened to kill the woman with a large kitchen knife. He also struck her repeatedly with his fist causing injury to her person. He fled the scene prior to the arrival of troopers in a silver Hyundai Sonata. After leaving the residence Rhody went onto Gap street where Rymarkiewicz observed him and started to follow his vehicle. Rymarkiewicz then saw Trooper Mark Knock and Cpl. Steven Schmit at the Heings Township Municipal Complex in stationary positions.Rhody, also observing the troopers, made an abrupt U-turn and fled south of Gap street at a high rate of speed. The three troopers pursued him with ligths and sirens activated. During the pursuit Rhody's vehicle reached speeds of 100 miles-per-hour in a 45 zone. He also disregarded designated lanes of travel and passed other vehicles in no-passing zones. At one point Knock attempted to pull alongside Rhody's vehicle to block it when he was behind a slow-moving tractor-trailer rig, but the suspect swerved repeatedly towards Knock's cruiser either in an attempt to stirke it or push him further into oncoming traffic.Upon entering the village of Good Spring all the vehicles slowed to about 35-40 mph. At this point Knock made contact with Rhody's vehicle which caused it to spin counter-clockwise. Rhody then accelerated rapidly in a westerly direction and his vehicle struck Rymarkiewicz's cruiser. Troopers said Rhody drove his vehicle at this point with one hand and the other out the window holding a large knife at Schmit.Rhody's vehicle subsequently ran head-on into a concrete precaset set of steps at a nearby residence while Schmit's patrol unit ran over several nearby shrubs and a mailbox owned by Sheila Witmer, of W. Center street,Good Spring.Rhody was taken into custody and charged. He was arraigned before District Judge James Ferrier, of Orwigsburg, and committed to the county prison in Pottsville after failing to post $1,000,000 cash bail.
