Food program for veterans is growing

Carbon County’s veteran food program is growing, officials report.

On Thursday, Commissioner Rocky Ahner provided an update on the MilitaryShare Program, which provides food boxes to any county veteran. Veteran food boxes included fruits and vegetables, canned and bottled goods, and eggs and milk through Second Harvest Food Bank.

Ahner said that the program has grown to provide 40 veterans with food boxes monthly.

The pickup takes place from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. the fourth Wednesday of every month at the Lehighton American Legion Post 314.

Sign-ups for the boxes are also completed at the Legion during pickups.

“If you have a friend who is a veteran, bring them along to the sign-up,” Ahner said.

The program, which is operated through the Carbon County Veterans Council, is made possible through Second Harvest, as well as the Pennsylvania Veterans Trust Fund and Subaru Foundation.

Carbon was the last of the six counties served by Second Harvest to join into this program, which began in October 2020.

It officially started in Carbon County in October 2021.
