A heating problem at the Carbon County Correctional Facility will be resolved sooner than initially expected.
On Thursday, the board of commissioners announced that they received word late Wednesday afternoon that the parts that are needed to resolve the broken heater for the women’s block of the prison will be coming in soon.
Commissioner Rocky Ahner said that the fix is expected to occur about Jan. 27.
The board approved an agreement with Trane of Wilkes-Barre to remove and replace the heat exchanger in the female unit at a cost of $6,631, which includes a one-year warranty for parts and labor.
The heating unit over the female block broke last Wednesday, causing issues with finding portable heaters and relocating some inmates into other parts of the prison.
On Wednesday, during the county prison board meeting, Warden James Youngkin said the temporary heater that was supplied by the Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency has been working well to provide warmth to the block.
The county adopted a disaster declaration and then renewed it again on Thursday.
Commissioners’ Chairman Wayne Nothstein said that the county must renew the declaration weekly until the problem is resolved.
