Thorpe discusses events for next Christmas
The book has barely been closed on the 2021 Christmas season, but Jim Thorpe officials are already eyeing two future holiday events.
Marianne Rustad, events coordinator for the Carbon Chamber and Economic Development Corporation, visited borough council’s workshop Thursday night to discuss the 2022 Black Forest Krampusnacht Festival, which organizers would like to move from Kemmerer Park to Memorial Park.
“We had a very successful inaugural festival, but we did face a few logistical challenges at Kemmerer Park and would like to keep the event in Jim Thorpe and move it to Memorial Park,” Rustad said.
Council has yet to act on the events application for 2022, but said Thursday night it hopes the event can work in conjunction with another idea in the works for Memorial Park.
“We’ve been approached by numerous people in the community about having a ‘Christmas Trees in the Park’ type setup like neighboring towns such as Palmerton and Lehighton,” Councilwoman Joanne Klitsch, who handles Memorial Park rentals, said. “We’re in the initial stages of trying to get a committee together on that. A lot of people have asked us about doing that.”
Discussion Thursday centered on whether Christmas Trees in the Park would preclude the Krampus Festival from taking place at Memorial Park.
“I’d like to see us look into whether they could be held there in tandem,” Councilman Mike Yeastedt said.
Rustad said she supported that idea.
“The trees are very beautiful and I think it would just add to the festival,” she said. “Other towns have approached us about wanting to host the Krampus Festival, but we’d really like to keep it in Jim Thorpe.”
The Krampus Festival is tentatively scheduled for Dec. 3, 2022.
“We’re just really excited about how the first year went,” Rustad said. “It brought about 1,500 people into town and we got such positive feedback.
“A lot of tourists have already said they are making plans to come back for December.”
