2022 reorganization: Slatington borough council

The Slatington Borough Council welcomed two new members, a new mayor, and a new fire chief during their reorganization meeting on Monday night.

In her first act as the borough’s new mayor, Jeralyn Schoch called the meeting to order and presided over the election of officers for council.

Council member Thomas Bartholomew was selected to be president. He was the chairman of the finance/planning/zoning committee, which will now be led by Ron Kratz.

Bryon Reed will serve as vice president and chairman of the water committee.

He had been the president of the council. And Kratz will serve as President Pro Tem and also was appointed to serve on the police pension committee.

The new council members are Zachari Halkias and Jeff Hausman. Halkias will serve as the chairman of the human community services committee. Hausman will serve as chairman of the highway committee.

Borough Manager Daniel Stevens, who was reappointed to his position that includes being secretary and treasurer, said Kevin Steckel will lead the public safety committee, and Joe Wechsler will be the chairman of the sewer and solid waste committee.

Former council member Dave Schnaars was appointed as the council chaplain.

Austin Berger is taking over as fire chief of the Slatington Volunteer Fire Department.

Stevens said Jason Nicholas had been the fire chief, but he is moving out of the borough. This makes him ineligible to stay on as fire chief.

Stevens also said the council decided to table accepting the resignation of tax collector Gwyneth Jones.

The council’s regular meeting for the month will be held at 7 p.m. on Jan. 10 in the borough building.
