Lehighton's highly successful Bike Night is only a few months away.Borough Manager Nicole Beckett informed borough council this week that the Lehighton Downtown Initiative is in the process of reorganizing. The 17th annual event will be held Aug. 8 by the initiative, as decided at a meeting of the group held earlier this month, Beckett said. The location for the event has yet to be decided, though it will likely be held at the borough's lower and upper park or the Grove, she said.Last month, a reorganizational meeting of the group was held in an attempt to restructure and reorganize the group, which formed in 2007.However, Beckett said membership fell apart over time, and a change in leadership was needed.Beckett said the goal is to have a committee that would serve as a liaison between the community and the borough.Resident Jim Henderson said it's important to promote the positive aspects of the downtown, coordinate development efforts, and take small steps at a time.Henderson estimated the process could take anywhere from seven to 10 years as the borough attempts to increase business in the downtown. The goal is to have committees work together on branding and events, fundraising, and communications and media. The next meeting of the LDI will be held at 6:30 p.m. April 16 in borough hall.
