Fifth annual Project Warm & Cozy to be held at Slatington Trailhead

Have one, leave one.

Need one, take one.

That’s the premise behind the fifth annual Project Warm & Cozy.

Hosted by Caring Hearts, the event will be held from noon to 3 p.m. Saturday at the Slatington Trailhead, 135 N. Railroad St.

At that time, new or gently used jackets, hats, scarves and gloves will be collected, according to Denise “Neice Eie” Martinez, founder/CEO/president of Caring Hearts, Slatington.

Martinez said Santa will arrive by firetruck, and added there will be pictures with Santa, cookies and hot chocolate, coffee, hot pizza, crafts for kids and a DJ with Christmas music.

“We draw a large crowd,” Martinez said. “It’s a great day to get into the holiday spirit with Caring Hearts.”

She said that in 2017, they collected over 300 hats, gloves and scarves in a two-week span. In 2018, they collected 500 pieces, and in 2019 they began collecting jackets and ended with a total of 600 pieces. In 2020, they collected over 1,000 items.

“We are certain to break the record of over 1,000 this year in 2021,” she said. “This has really caught on in our community,”

Martinez said the group has two locations in Slatington: one at the D&L Trailhead on North Railroad Street, as well as at the Slatington Springside Fish Hatchery on Route 873/Main Street.

She said the project runs through mid-January, and added people can drop their items off at the new Caring Hearts Clothing Closet and More in Slatington, 7935 Route 873 in Slatington.

Martinez said she’s hopeful that the Caring Hearts Clothing Closet and More in Slatington - where everything is free, there are no price tags and no cash register - is open by mid-December.

“We are here for the community,” she said. “Donations are welcome if you are able.”

Martinez said anyone who has any clothing donations (men’s, women’s, children’s, infants) shoes, or small household items, may call or email them to schedule an appointment or drop off.

She said last year she opened Caring Hearts Closet, 1341 W. Linden St., in Allentown.

Martinez said the local 501(c)3 nonprofit organization established in 2016 also does online raffles, as well as lots of fundraising.
