A state police vehicle and a deer were involved in a crash early Monday in Schuylkill County.

State police at Schuylkill Haven said Trooper Edward Sanchez, 56, was operating a 2015 Ford Taurus state police cruiser along Route 443 in Union Township, at 12:36 a.m., responding to a high priority call. Sanchez was westbound and crested the top of a hill when he encountered a deer standing in his travel lane.

He applied his brakes and swerved to the right but the deer also walked to the right directly in front of the vehicle, which struck the deer and ran over it.

Sanchez was not injured but the cruiser was towed.
