Tamaqua student charged with assault

A teacher was injured during a fight at the Tamaqua Area High School in October.

Charges were filed last week.

According to Tamaqua police, on Oct. 19, an argument occurred between two students inside of the high school’s cafeteria. Police said a 15-year-old student ran “approximately 60 feet toward” a 16-year-old student.

During the sequence, a teacher and assistant principal tried to stand in front of the student to help avoid harm.

Police said teachers tried to communicate with the aggressor, but he then struck the other student several times, and also struck the teacher in her face and shoulder.

Police said the attacked student proceeded to “take down” the aggressor in self-defense, and after trying to walk away, the aggressor chased him.

The fight was eventually broken up and the students were separated, said police.

A high school assistant principal walked the aggressor down to the office, at which time the student proceeded to walk out the front doors of the school, said police.

No injuries were reported by the student victim, however, the teacher was injured.

The 15-year-old student was charged with simple assault, recklessly endangering another person and disorderly conduct.

The names of the students were not released by police because of them being juveniles.
