'Perfume' is winning word in spelling bee

Isabella Mujevic has no problem being the 'Queen' Bee.

At least not after the Towamensing Elementary fifth-grader earned top honors in the school's Spelling Bee held earlier this month in the school gymnasium. In all, 14 students who ranged from fourth to sixth grade competed in the event, according to Kristin Heller, event coordinator.Heller said the 14 students placed either first or second in their respective homeroom spelling bees. Before the event, fourth through sixth grade homeroom teachers held a standardized spelling bee to determine the top two winners of their homeroom, with third place being the alternate, Heller said.A total of four rounds were held during the event, said Heller, who noted that fourth-graders competed first, followed by fifth graders and then sixth-graders.In the final round, the top winner from the fourth, fifth and sixth grade rounds competed, Heller said. She said the final round went back and forth 27 rounds between Isabella and sixth-grader Brock Bollinger. When Brock misspelled the word sediment, Isabella spelled it correctly, Heller said.Isabella then spelled the winning word, perfume, correctly, she said.
