Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump and vice presidential candidate Gov. Mike Pence delivered speeches to an enthusiastic crowd ready for change at Wednesday’s town hall at Lackawanna College in Scranton.

Top on the agenda of reform were U.S.-China trade, Veterans Affairs, tax, immigration, Second Amendment rights, paying for the wall, and most important to the region: getting back coal mining and steel jobs.From Pence’s speech:• “Hillary Clinton must never become president of the United States. We need to have strong common sense.”• About Trump: “He will make tax cuts every year and will bring the strong Republican leadership to the White House. He is a good man had has a wonderful family. He’s a dreamer, builder, fighter, and patriot. He will put America first and back on top.”Comments from Trump:• THE CAMPAIGN: “I didn’t need to do this. I had a nice life, but everything is wrong.”• THE CONVENTION: “We had a lot of flags,” Trump said about the number of flags on stage at the Republican National Convention in Cleveland.• THE DEMOCRATIC NATIONAL CONVENTION: “They don’t honor our police, don’t honor our law enforcement.”• HIS CHILDREN: “I’m very proud of my children,” Trump said, after his son Eric spoke. He attended the Hill School as a child.• INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS: “We have no respect around the world. Wouldn’t it be nice if we could get along with Russia?”• TRADE: “I’m a free trader, I believe in it.”“Every single country we do business with, we get ripped off. We’re going to start making things again.”• JOBS: “The jobs we have are bad jobs. Many of (the companies) go to Mexico. Not anymore.”Trump said he would bring back coal, jobs, companies. “Gas is going to be a beautiful thing.”Trump said he would put a 35 percent tax for every air conditioner made in Mexico and would not loan money.• HIS EXPERIENCE: “I love business. I just love it. I built an unbelievable company.”• HILLARY CLINTON: He tells supporters Clinton cannot be president, but that he’d love to see a female president eventually: “I want to see a woman become president but it can’t be her, she’s a disaster.” The crowd cheered.• MEDIA: Trump said that “25 percent of them are the worst people you would ever encounter.”The crowd joined in by holding signs that said “do not believe the liberal media,” and met Trump’s criticism with a standing ovation, cheers, applause and angry stares and directed all of this toward the media section in the back of the room.• THE WALL: “Who will pay?” Trump asked. The crowd answered, “Mexico.”• NATO: Referencing the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, Trump said: “I love NATO,” something he said the media says he is not for. However, Trump says that NATO is not paying their fair share. “Only five countries pay.• NAFTA: Trump again spoke to the loss of manufacturing jobs in Scranton. Trump said he wants to renegotiate NAFTA. Trump says since the presidency of Bill Clinton, 45 percent of those jobs were lost.“I want nice and simple deals,” Trump said.“We are going to make the country strong again, take care of veterans,” which awarded Trump a standing ovation.• CLOSING STATEMENT: “If I knew I wasn’t going to win, I wouldn’t waste my time. I’ll make things fair.”
