It will likely cost Schuylkill County more than $100,000 to fix two bridges in Barnesville and Pine Grove.
Commissioners on Thursday opened bids to repair the spans. Six companies submitted bids, which may be awarded when commissioners meet next on Aug. 13.The companies and their total bids are: Kevin E. Raker Construction, Sunbury, Northumberland County, $116,765; DESCCO, Fleetwood, Berks County, $148,160; Heim Construction, Pottsville, $168,456; Bi-State Construction, Easton, $205,445; Barletta Materials and Construction, Hazleton, $223,667; and Bill Anskis Company, Elysburg, Northumberland County, $228,783.They'll give the job to the company that will do the best work for the least amount of money.Commissioners will make their decision based on the lowest total bid for both bridges.County bridge 42, built in 1929, is on Orchard Road over Pine Creek in Rush Township. The repair work includes removing a parapet joint.Water had been leaking onto it, causing it to deteriorate. It also involves what is called scour repair, fixing areas of the base where moving water has begun to cause erosion.Large rocks will be placed at the base to divert the flow. Also, the road over the bridge will be resurfaced.About 967 vehicles use the two-lane, 60-foot long bridge every day, and it has been designated as structurally deficient.County bridge 125, on Kopp Road over Mahantongo Creek, needs the same repairs. In other matters, commissioners renewed a special risk insurance policy that covers 754 volunteers in the county. The one-year policy, through the County Commissioners Association of Pennsylvania, costs $2,332.
