Hometown man in hospital after collapse at Rush meeting

Joe Shamonsky of Hometown, who fell ill during a Rush Township supervisors' meeting Thursday, was transported by Tamaqua Ambulance to St. Luke's Miners Memorial Hospital, Coaldale, where he was admitted. His wife Shirley said Friday that he was being treated and remained a patient there.

Shamonsky had spoken during the public comment portion of the meeting, and argued with the supervisors and code enforcement officer Bill McMullen over a shed that supervisor Jeanine Motroni has on her property. It's Shamonsky's contention that Motroni didn't obtain the proper permit before having the shed placed on her property.Shamonsky had returned to his seat but uttered a curse directed at the supervisors. Chairman Shawn Gilbert had then asked Sgt. Duane Frederick to escort Shamonsky from the meeting. At that time, Shamonsky began to rise from his chair but collapsed onto the floor in front of the row of chairs, lying in front of his brother, Charles Shamonksy and Bill Boyer. Shamonsky's son, Joe, was also in attendance at the meeting.Tamaqua Ambulance was summoned and had loaded Shamonksy for transport at about 7:50. The supervisors then reconvened the meeting.
