A whopping $409,000 is needed for Weissport to replace underground water mains and service lines for two blocks on White Street.
Arland Moyer, council vice president, said that the figures were provided by Lehighton Water Authority.Moyer said that water mains were replaced in the first block of White Street several years ago, but the project didn't move further down the block because the funds ran out."We want to repave White Street after the bridge detour is complete," said Moyer. "We should replace the outdated water lines before we repave the street."Moyer said that Weissport needs to seek grant funds for the water lines.Moyer said the mains will cost approximately $260,000, plus $2,500 for each lateral and then $7,000 to replace each hydrant.Moyer was proposing new mains for the 300 to 500 blocks of White Street. In other grant business, the borough lost out on getting a grant that would pay for upgrading sidewalks with handicapped ramps."The deadline ran out," said council Vice President Sue Pywar. "I'm disappointed."Pywar said that she had asked the borough engineer to provide specifications for the grant and that he failed to do so.Pywar asked attorney Michael Greek what could be done."There is no legal recourse," Greek said. "The only thing you can do is get rid of the engineer and get a new one. There is no guarantee that you would have gotten the grant."Greek said that he works closely with the engineer in other communities and he is always on top of issues.Pywar said, "Maybe we should get him to do the specifications now so we're ready for the round of grants next year."
