As the temperatures plummet to record lows this winter, people begin dreaming of white, sandy beaches; clear waters and tropical drinks with tiny umbrellas.
For many, this vision of warm weather locales is only a dream.But some decide that they've had enough of the arctic and book that once-in-a-lifetime trip to some place where summer never seems to end.Ann Kline, a travel agent at AAA's Tamaqua branch, said that at AAA, January and February are typically the busier months for winter travel.Lisa Gower, a travel agent at Travel Impressions in Bethlehem, noted that they find people are looking to get away from December through March.Popular destinations for couples include Jamaica, Punta Cana, Mexico and the Caribbean; while families opt for fun places like Disneyworld in Florida.Other warm-weather destination favorites, according to new sources and Gower, include Hawaii, St. Martin, Cancun, Bahamas, Playa del Carmen, Puerto Rico, Key West and Miami Beach.Melissa Dolan, a travel agent at Farrah's West End Travel in Brodheadsville, noted that cruises are also popular options for winter getaways.Kline, Dolan and Gower agreed that the number one reason for many when booking a vacation is to get away from the cold weather."People actually come in and say 'I want to get away from the cold, I don't care where I go,'" Gower said.The price of getting away from the coldGower said that the average cost for a seven night trip for a family of four to an all-inclusive beach resort during the winter months is approximately $5,000.Dolan added that it will cost families looking to go experience Disney for a week about $3,000 without a food package.Want more winter?There are some snowbirds who like the chill of winter and the fresh powdery snow.In those cases, Gower said that ski getaways can be arrangedAccording to Forbes.com, the top ski destinations include Jackson Hole Mountain Resort in Wyoming, Snowbird and Solitude, Utah; Alaska; Lake Tahoe and Mammoth Mountain, Calif. and Vail and Telluride, Colo.Other big ski areas, Gower said include Canada and some European countries that also have skiing and wintry conditions.Online helpOnline help is also available for people who want to book or at least browse and dream of a winter vacation.Websites like Travelocity, Kayak, Orbitz and Expedia are one-stop-shops that show available flights, hotels, cruises and activities for hundreds of winter destinations.
