Monroe County History Challenge to be held

The Monroe County Historical Association has announced a competition and scholarship event for Monroe County high school juniors.

The Monroe County History Challenge will be held at 6 p.m. April 23 in the Monroe County Courthouse in Stroudsburg.The competition will consist of four rounds of questions and will test participants' knowledge on U.S. history, economics, geography, Pennsylvania history, local history and current events.This competition will award monetary prizes first place is $500, second place is $300 and third place is $200.The public is invited and encouraged to attend.The history challenge is coordinated by John H. Abel, chairman of the Monroe County Historical Association's History Committee.Assisting with this year's challenge are: moderator, Amy Leiser, executive director of the Monroe County Historical Association; registrar, Barbara Kopetskie; announcer, Kathleen Boyle; timekeeper, Rick Bodensch.The two student coordinators are Kathleen Boyle and Barbara Kopetskie.Dr. Martin Wilson of East Stroudsburg University will serve as judge and the Honorable Jennifer Harlacher Sibum and the Honorable Arthur L. Zulick will serve as appeals judges.Ian Ackroyd-Kelly, Elaine Ackroyd-Kelly, Mary Barlieb, Josephine Friedman and James Werkheiser will assist throughout the evening.Blue Ridge Communications will be recording the competition and it will be aired at a later date.For additional information regarding the history challenge, contact the historical association at 570-421-7703 or email at
